  Attended Roxbury grade school from 1914-1922. Attended Stephens High School at Rumford, commuting by train from Roxbury. I graduated from the general course in 1926. During the year 1926-27, I attended Bates College at Lewiston. As I was not particularly interested in any of the subjects offered there, I did not return for another year. In September 1928, I entered Wentworth Institute for a one year course in Carpentry and Building and graduated with honors in 1929. Returned in fall of 1929 and took a two year course in Architectural Instruction, graduating in June 1931.
  
  After graduating from high school in 1926, I went to Cape Elizabeth to chauffeur for Everett R. Josselyn. He passed on after I had been there less than three weeks, so I returned to camp with the family.
  
  During the fall of 1927, I lived with Mrs. F.D. Abbott, Damage Avenue, Auburn, and chauffeured weekends for Lila B. Tracy and four days a week for Mrs. Stevens, mother of Mrs. Steven Irish.
  
  During the summer of 1928, I stayed with Earl Crommett, 59 Hoodmont Street, Portland, and mowed lawns in the vicinity.
  
  After graduation from Wentworth, jobs in the building trades just did not exist. Stayed at home the remainder of the year at South Gray. I helped tear down the old barn and build a new one.
  About the first of 1932, I went to Mercer, Maine to work cutting pine and birch with Bill Downing, a classmate for three years at Wentworth Institute.
  
  In the spring of 1932, I went to Frye to work for brother-in-law, Edwin E. Swain. Did farm work and drove truck.
  
  During the winter of 1932-33, I lived with Mr. and Mrs. Stratton at Rumford Center, repairing furniture and doing odd jobs.
  
  In the spring of 1933, I moved up to Frye, living with the Albert L. Robbins family at Frye Store. At this time, I built a brooder house and started raising chickens. Worked driving truck during the summer for Edwin E. Swain and in the woods, logging, for William A. Burgess, during the winter of 1933-34.
  
  In 1934, I raised more hens, drove truck, and from August to the last of November, I worked for U.S.A. building, operating, and dismantling stock yard for drouth cattle from the west on the farm of Edwin E. Swain at Frye.
  During the winter of 1934-35, I worked in the Swain and Reed dowel mill at Roxbury. I drove truck again that summer for Victor Binford.
  
  On August 16, 1935, I married Isabel Robbins, daughter of Albert L. and Annie J. Robbins of Frye. She graduated Stephens high school in 1933 and from Farmington State Normal school in 1935.
  
  In September 1935, I started carrying mail from Rumford to Houghton, as the train service passenger and freight combined, was curtailed to three days a week. It was a temporary permit to terminate in June 1936. In March of that year, a flood damaged the railroad between Rumford and Kennebago beyond repair, so I negotiated a new contract and continued to carry mail. During 1936, I obtained passenger and express franchises from the Public Utilities Communication to operate between Rumford and Houghton.
