Here he met Harriet Day and was married. With the money which he had saved he bought a farm on ?South Road in Denmark, Maine. The land was full of stumps and stones and the buildings in a poor condition. He was a man who had a dread of debt and for him to owe a dollar meant extra effort until every penny was paid. He usually succeeded in keeping some money at interest. It was a common saying of his that "A penny saved, was worth two pennies earned." He was a jovial companion, and was fond of company. He home was a favorite and welcome place for all comers who always had a good time with "Uncle Cum".

The second marriage produced a girl named Betsy..and a son named Henry...After the death of James, Huldah approached the Court of Massachusetts to have these two births legally recorded and transcribed. This record was found in the vault of the M. Archives...Huldah died 9 years after Henry's birth. The 2 children were made wards of her brother, Thomas Simond of Topsfield, MA. Thomas, his family and the 2 children moved to what was known as Pleasant Mountain Gore.
